Source AeroTime

Munich Airport launched the new satellite terminal as a joint venture between the airport and Lufthansa.

The new facility will give Munich Airport 27 new gate positions where passengers can board aircraft directly without bus transportation. The capacity of Terminal 2, will be increased by 11 million to 36 million passengers per year.

Total investments in the satellite terminal amount to about 900 million euros, including the costs for the new building itself, the expansion of the baggage sorting facility and the construction work. The costs are shared on a 60:40 basis by Munich Airport and Lufthansa.

Preparatory work for the new passenger building started in the summer of 2011. The cornerstone was laid on April 23, 2012, and the topping-out ceremony took place on September 12, 2013. Construction of the building itself was completed in the fall of 2015.

JetBlue took the first aircraft delivery from the Airbus manufacturing facility in the United states. The entire team of employees from the American assembly line gathered to present their very first US-completed product.

“I am immensely proud to be here to participate in this first delivery from Mobile,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer – Customers.

JetBlue operates a predominately Airbus fleet, including 130 A320s and 26 A321s. The carrier designated its milestone U.S.-built A321 “BluesMobile” – which combines its tradition of naming aircraft with the word “blue” and a recognition for this single-aisle jetliner’s production in Mobile, Alabama.

Airbus announced its commitment to build a single-aisle assembly line at Alabama in 2012, and less than one year later broke ground on the $600 million worth facility. The ceremonial inauguration of the plant came in September 2015. The aircraft delivered to JetBlue successfully had its first flight on March 21st, 2016.

In addition to the delivered aircraft, there are currently nine other A320 Family aircraft in production at the facility. Airbus anticipates delivering four aircraft per month from the Mobile plant by the end of 2017.

Microsoft and Rolls-Royce announced collaboration for next generation of intelligent engines. Rolls-Royce will integrate Microsoft Azure IoT Suite and Cortana Intelligence Suite into its service solutions to expand its digital capabilities.

“By working with Microsoft we can really transform our digital services, supporting customers right across engine-related aircraft operations to make a real difference to performance," said Tom Palmer, senior VP, Services, Civil Aerospace, at Rolls-Royce.

With this collaboration, engine management will move beyond the current levels of proactive monitoring of engine health and inflight performance. Through a greater understanding of flight operations excellence, fuel usage and maintenance planning, Rolls-Royce’s airline customers will be able to better retain asset value throughout an engine’s lifecycle, reduce flight disruptions.

Using Azure Stream Analytics and Microsoft Power BI dashboards, the goal is to uncover data insights that will enable airlines to improve their operational performance and increase fuel efficiency.
